n 1983 initial discussions were held with the Qld Cancer Fund and it was decided that there should be an accommodation unit constructed for out of town patients receiving cancer treatment at the Townsville General hospital.

In 1986 Ross River Rotary Club President Russ O’Malley committed our club to be the main driver in implementing the construction of the Lodge and made this our major project for the year.

After years of negotiations the club committed to raise $125000 and with other donations from the GLUYAS Estate and the Breakwater Casino Community Fund , land was purchased at 24 Warburton Street near the Hospital.

In 1989 with the help of other clubs well over $500000 was raised and our club member Barry Eames prepared the architectural drawings. In 1990 Club President Gary Lillycrap helped lay the foundation stone.

Club working bees prepared the site for construction and Barry subsequently supervised the work.

The Lodge was opened in 1991 and the club continued with working bees to help maintain the property for some years later.
